Sara Ashrafi, an accomplished painter and senior research associate at Harvard

University, was born in 1981 in Tehran, Iran, and currently resides in Geneva,

Switzerland.

Her artistic journey commenced in early childhood, and despite being primarily

self-taught, Sara actively participated in professional development workshops

from the tender age of 13. By the age of 19, she was already making significant

contributions as a cartoonist for renowned Iranian magazines.

Sara’s artistic prowess has transcended borders, with invitations to prestigious

symposiums and exhibitions worldwide, including Italy, Bratislava, Denmark,

France, Slovakia, Sirilanahka, Hudson, New York, Switzerland, and Armenia. Her

works adorn public and private collections in both Iran and Europe.

In her artist statement, Sara articulates her “intent to capture and convey the

emotional essence she perceives in her subjects.” Employing acrylics for their

vibrant colors and creamy texture, she focuses on portraying ordinary life and

social issues. Each painting seeks to encapsulate a memorable moment within

the recesses of the mind, often imbued with a sense of longing.

Sara was honored with the Gala Art for Harvard University award in 2019,

acknowledging her significant contributions. Furthermore, she has artistically

rendered illustrations for an upcoming book affiliated with Emory University,

slated for publication by MIT Press.

One of her paintings titled “Inner Child” has earned a place of honor in the

Tehran Contemporary Art Museum.

Sara’s expressionist style, characterized by textured brushstrokes, not only guides

the viewer’s focus but also leaves ample room for individual interpretation and

dreams. Through her unique artistic language, she invites audiences to explore

the nuanced emotions embedded within her captivating works.
